How We Can Help You

Transition Management / Succession Planning / Interim Director

It's never too early to begin succession planning. A change in leadership, whether planned or unplanned, can be difficult for any organization. Sometimes you need someone to come in and keep the ship afloat during difficult times. Whether it's serving in an interim role, or assisting current employees in completing their tasks, SCG can help your non-profit. Being ready with a plan can help your non-profit weather the inevitable challenges of leadership transition. Laura has served as the interim executive director for four non-profit organizations including Congregation Tifereth Israel, the Reeb Avenue Center, Central Ohio Diabetes Association and Camp Fire Boys & Girls. In the interim role, she provided assistance in finances, budgeting, human resources, funding, grant writing, development, board relations, public relations, executive search, and merger/acquisition services.

Program Development and Expansion

As the executive director of Mental Health America of Franklin County (MHAFC) Laura led the expansion of programs serving 2,763 people to over 63,000. She oversaw the development and implementation of nine new prevention and client-based programs. These included: Ombudsman Access Program, Pro-Bono Counseling Program, Mental Health First Aid, Ohio Mental Health Caucus, Support Groups (Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-Partum Depression, Schizophrenics Anonymous), and community-wide Mental Health Screenings. She increased program service fees at MHAFC over 850% during her tenure. All but one of these programs received long-term sustainable funding.

Laura is available to consult on current programs, future programming ideas, and evaluating programs to determine if they are meeting their intended goals.

Coalition Building

Laura served as co-chair of the Coalition for Healthy Communities, the statewide mental health and substance use coalition for 16 years, building support for behavioral health issues throughout Ohio. Laura built partnerships with 30 not-for-profit organizations in Franklin County to implement a pro-bono counseling program. She established long-term funding from the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board (ADAMH) of Franklin County and the United Way of Central Ohio.

Grant Writing

Laura has written hundreds of grants and proposals totaling over $10 million. Funders include over 50 federal, state and local foundations, corporate and government sources. Laura ensures that the grants she writes are concise, complete, and well written. A sample of the successful grants and proposals are listed on the Success Stories & Testimonials page.

Fund Raising

  • Are you frustrated because you just don't have the time to actively fund raise?
  • Do you have donors who you know would donate more if you just had the time to ask them?
  • Are your staff so overworked that there isn't a free minute to even think about doing more?
  • Do you wish your staff had more skills in donor cultivation?
  • Do you constantly have to convince your board members that you need more help in order to raise more funds effectively? Is it falling on deaf ears?
  • Are you not able to "friend raise," let alone fund raise?
  • Are you losing money because you don't know how to reach the millennials that everyone keeps talking about?
  • Are you tired of constantly hearing "do more with less?"
  • Do you wish that someone would just come in and help you raise more money?
  • Do you want to set up a planned giving strategy but you don't know where to start?
Laura has been there. In her years of working in various non-profit organizations, she has a very strong history of successful fund raising. Laura can help your organization reach its goals. She was successful in increasing membership donations by 350% with donor cultivation and improved solicitation procedures. She created and implemented six online auctions netting more than $170,000. Laura increased the funding base of one of her past organizations by 600% through grant writing, direct mail and special events. She successfully secured a 166% increase in United Way funding. Under her leadership, a signature event was created, which to date has raised over $500,000. Laura can help you strategize for the "ask."

Group Facilitation

Sometimes all you need is a person from the "outside" helping you to see your vision in a different way. Whether it's a one-hour meeting or a weekend retreat, SCG can assist you in meeting your event goals.

Non-Profit / Association Management

Non-profit organizations are often seeking better, more cost-effective ways to handle administrative services. SCG can help reduce your overhead in many ways. Your association may be small, or you may choose not to hire an employee. We can manage your database and assist with budgeting and financial management. SCG can work with your volunteer board to develop policy and procedure manuals, meeting minutes and administrative duties, bylaws and articles of incorporation, goal setting and long-range plans.
“As an active member of the Finance Committee, I could see first hand the positive impact she had on the agency. Her understanding of financial matters, her incredible fund raising skills, and her ability to reach a large donor base were outstanding.” More...

King Stumpp, President & CEO, Netcare Corporation
I have worked with Laura in a professional capacity for 12 years. I have observed her bring an advocacy agency to life with new programs and initiatives. Laura is a hard worker with a masterful skill set - program design, funding, grant writing, collaboration and management, including turnaround situations. Laura is always tuned into what is happening in the arena in which she works and is a "go to" person when questions or issues arise. I certainly value our working relationship highly.
Kevin Brady, Vice President, Market Operations, American Electric Power (AEP) Ohio
I have had the pleasure of working with Laura for the past six years. I served on the Board of Trustees of Mental Health America of Franklin County when she was the executive director. As an active member of the Finance Committee, I could see first hand the positive impact she had on the agency. Her understanding of financial matters, her incredible fund raising skills, and her ability to reach a large donor base were outstanding. She ended each fiscal year with a substantial surplus of funds. Laura was successful in starting a variety of new programs that helped people with mental health issues, and was able to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs. She never wavered in her commitment to making sure the agency was well funded, run efficiently and effectively. Laura is highly respected in the community for her efforts and passion for the people she served. I would recommend Laura to anyone looking for a consultant with extensive knowledge in all aspects of non-profit organizations.
Leslie Ryan, CISSP, GWAPT, Senior Security Consultant, Dell SecureWorks
Working as a board member with MHAFC, I saw first hand Laura's ability to effectively manage every aspect of a non-profit organization. She partnered with other organizations to implement many cutting-edge programs, such as pro-bono counseling and MEDTAPP, and tirelessly promoted the cause of mental health in the Central Ohio area. Laura has built many relationships at the local, state, and national levels and is an excellent resource for any organization seeking to fundraise, build on existing programs, or implement new ones.
Barb Davis, Director of Human Resources, Columbus College of Art & Design
I served on MHAFC's board of directors as Treasurer and Vice President for several terms. During this tenure I found Laura to be dedicated to the cause of mental health in our community. She was a great collaborator with the entire board. Her fiscal discipline was always outstanding, adhering to budget constraints consistently. She managed her staff effectively and didn't hesitate to seek the counsel of others, demonstrating the open mindedness one would expect from a leader. Although my time away from my board position is long past, I continue to maintain a relationship with Laura.
Mary B Relotto, Founder, DamesBond and Mission Possible
Rarely do you find someone with as much integrity and drive, as Laura. She not only has the skill set, but the mindset to accomplish even the hardest of tasks.
Carole Robinson, Human Resources Consultant
I had the privilege of serving on MHAFC's Board for two terms and worked closely with Laura as the chair of the Board's Human Resources committee. Laura is not just a highly skilled Executive Director, she is a fiscal guardian, a proven leader, and a sought out expert in mental health advocacy. Laura has a very pragmatic approach, she investigates the needs and resources thoroughly, sets a plan of action, coordinates her team, and then follows through - no task is too complicated, or to small... she gets the job done each and every time. It is a true pleasure to work with Laura and watch the magic she performs with limited non-profit resources, from providing screening services and support groups, to testifying on mental health parity, to MHAFC's annual fund raising gala at the State House. Thank you Laura for all you do.
